"Restoration Period Silver-plated Bronze Clock, Marly Horse"
Marly horse clock from the Restoration period, after the work of the king's ordinary sculptor, Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746). Coustou had received a commission from King Louis XV in 1739 for two sculpted groups in Carrara marble to decorate the watering trough at the Château de Marly. The subject represents a spirited horse struggling with the groom (Amerindian slave), who is trying to control the rearing animal. The original sculpted groups are kept at the Louvre Museum, and copies have been installed in their original location. This triple-patina clock has been gilded with gold for the base and the groom, silvered for the rearing horse, and the grassy mound has been treated with a medal patina. Mechanism by Honoré Pons (1773-1851). Revision required.
