Beautiful pair of covered pots in verde antico marble richly decorated with chiseled gilt bronzes in the Louis XVI style. They rest on a pedestal and a projecting base, decorated with friezes of water leaves and gadroons. The scrolled handles have a rich decoration of foliage and bunches of fruit. These are ceremonial objects, directly inspired by 18th-century fireplace fittings.
Early 20th century, Louis XVI style.
Note that the same pair sold 15000 $ at Sotheby's in November 2020.
Very good overall condition. Electrical installation not verified.
Verde antico marble, quarried in Antiquity in Greece and Italy, was one of the most prized materials for imperial and aristocratic ornamentation. Rediscovered and reused in the decorative arts from the 18th century onwards, it adorned luxury objects mounted in gilded bronze in the Louis XVI style. This pair of covered pots mounted as a lamp is a beautiful reinterpretation from the end of the 19th century.
Height of the pots without the mounting 54 cm
