This large oil on canvas depicts a particularly lively farmyard scene, in which a spectacular confrontation pits a rooster against a turkey. The vigor of the poses, the slightly parted beaks, the outstretched wings, and the movement of the plumage lend this scene its full intensity, while the other animals appear to be watching the duel.
Surrounding the two protagonists are several species of poultry: a crested hen, a silky white hen surrounded by her chicks, and a peacock visible in the background. On the left side of the composition, a magnificent macaw—the only exotic animal in the painting—is perched on a pedestal adorned with bunches of grapes. Its presence evokes the 18th-century aristocratic tradition of keeping rare birds brought back from the Americas in aviaries and menageries.
The composition is arranged like a theatrical scene. The animals move through a garden adorned with classical architecture, while a landscape unfolds in the background beneath a cloudy sky. The artist pays particular attention to the rendering of the plumage, alternating textural effects and the vibrant colors of the rooster and parrot with the softer tones of the landscape.
This type of depiction enjoyed great success in the Flemish and Dutch schools beginning in the second half of the 17th century. Intended to decorate prestigious residences, these large animal scenes combine naturalistic observation, decorative richness, and spectacular staging.
The canvas bears a very visible monogram in the center of the painting; it appears to read “CAM,” though no definitive attribution can be proposed.
