"June 1500 - Château De Conflans Savoie Alberville - Appointment Of A Judge - 2 Parchments"
Two documents on parchment - dimensions: approximately 29.3/23.7 and 12/21.7 cm - folds, traces of humidity - as is. The first document, dated June 24, 1500, is an official document by which the authorities of the commune of Lyaud (Lieonay), in the Cluses valley, appoint Benoît Ballandrin de "Loys Ludo (?)" to the position of ordinary judge and town crier of the Château de Conflans (Savoie) for a period of two years, with all the rights, judicial powers and honors that go with it. This is an act of recognition of his legal skills and his moral and intellectual merits. The document is written in a humanist style typical of the Renaissance, valuing virtue, merit and the republican order of offices. Second document: Official confirmation of the proper execution of the mandate of Benoît Ballandrin, appointed the previous year as judge and crier of the Château de Conflans. It is delivered in public assembly, with notarized testimony, and signed by Antoine Gaudi, judge and protonotary of Lyaud. Probably a renewal of mandate. The Château de Conflans, where this judge exercised his office, was from the 11th century a military and legal control post in the Tarentaise valley - The châtellenie had a major military role for the Count of Savoy - In 1600 the Kingdom of France took the castle during the siege of the Château de Conflans during the Franco-Savoyard War. In the 19th century the last vestiges disappeared. (see engravings at the end of the slideshow).
