Vervelle Aîné – Box in marquetry of precious materials and brass. Precious jewelry box from the Napoleon III period, made by the prestigious firm of Vervelle Aîné, famous Parisian cabinetmaker and table maker of the 19th century. This refined box is distinguished by its marquetry of precious materials – including tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, ivory – combined with an engraved brass decoration, all framed by gilt bronze rods. The lid is adorned with a central cartouche on a tortoiseshell background, bearing the initials “AB,” most likely those of the first owner. It is framed with brass scrolls, stylized mother-of-pearl flowers, and four matching spandrels. Gilt bronze rods decorate the perimeter of the lid as well as the base of the box. The front features an engraved brass floral motif and a finely cut ivory keyhole. The blackened interior houses a lock signed “Vervelle Aîné,” attesting to the piece’s origin. About Vervelle Aîné: Established in Paris, at 1 rue Neuve-Saint-Gilles, since the 1830s, the Vervelle Aîné house has distinguished itself in the manufacture of boxes, necessities and luxury objects. It was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie in 1834.
