Parisian of modest origins, he began as a painter and draftsman but became especially known in the world of engraving for his etchings and his collaborations with Eugène Delâtre.
Apprenticed at a very young age in various companies, it was through contact with the lithographer Faria that his talent for drawing seemed to reveal itself.
He then attended evening classes, then the studio of Gustave Moreau, and decided to pursue a career as a painter.
Before the First World War, with the rise of artist's etching, Brouet also produced numerous small original prints of much more personal inspiration. His work was quickly recognized by dealers and collectors.
