A Pastillage Water Pot, Early 18th C.

Lovely pastillage water pot, blue with yellow and orange chips; fresh color.

Nevers or Montpellier pastillage is an ornamentation technique in which the decorations are modeled separately and then glued to the surface of a vase using slip.

This ceramic decoration process consists in applying cut-outs or reliefs to the soft paste of a vase, etc., also in soft paste.

This operation precedes firing and the application of glaze or enamel. Pastillage is the opposite of sigillation, and consists in printing ornaments projected from the vase itself, using special molds.
