After training as an artist, Gross spent much of his career in France from the 1870s-1880s, where he studied notably with Edmond-Marie Petitjean. After settling permanently in Europe, he participated regularly in the Paris Salon and also exhibited in the United States (notably at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts)
Gross is best known as a landscape and marine painter: his works depict the French countryside, seashores and coastal scenes, often treated with a realistic facture and a sensitivity for the effects of light and atmosphere typical of the naturalist landscape of the late XIXᵉ century.
He participated in international exhibitions (including the 1889 World's Fair) and is featured in local public collections, for example at the Allentown Art Museum.
