Imperial Russian Snuffbox In Gold, Enamel And Pearls
St Petersburg, circa 1795–1820
A magnificent work of Imperial Russian goldsmithing, this snuffbox — crafted in 72 zolotnik gold (18 carats) — is a refined example of early 19th-century neoclassical elegance, likely made in St Petersburg under the reign of Paul I or Alexander I. Of rectangular form with canted corners, it is adorned with translucent green and blue enamels over engine-turned guilloché ground, finely engraved details, a painted miniature and a border of natural pearls.
The lid features an exquisite enamelled scene of a classical woman offering or decorating a vase, symbolising grace and abundance, framed by an oval garland of pearls. The sides and reverse are decorated with neoclassical motifs — urns, columns and architectural façades — in the Russian Empire style.
The interior is fully gilt and bears crisp hallmarks: the imperial double-headed eagle, the “72” gold standard, and the maker’s initials “Н.Е.” confirming its St Petersburg origin.
An object of rare refinement and diplomatic prestige, emblematic of the luxurious gift culture of Imperial Russia.
