"Baptismal Font (18th Century)"
This richly decorated Spanish baptismal font dates from the early 18th century and was made of earthenware. This font was made of high-fired clay. The green copper oxide shard was covered with a lead glaze. In this technique, the pottery is fired a second time at a lower temperature, which melts the transparent glaze. This font was hung next to the front door so that residents and visitors could make the sign of the cross upon entering the house. This specimen is remarkably richly decorated with plant motifs and religious elements such as angels, a chalice, and an image of Mary and Child. Condition: This font has an 8 cm crack but is otherwise in relatively good condition considering the age of the object.
