" Reliquary – Mini Neo-gothic Chasse - Reliquary Crosses - Reliquary Of The True Cross "
Late 19th century – France This miniature Neo-Gothic gilt brass chasse contains a group of relics associated with the True Cross. Inside are three small solid silver reliquary crosses suspended on crimson velvet, as well as an oval reliquary mounted under glass containing a central fragment decorated with sequins and a handwritten cartouche reading: “True Cross”. A small old paper, glued to the back of the oval case, attests to the whole with this handwritten note: “The 3 small crosses contain the True Cross”, testifying to a pious and documented transmission. A typical object of French religious productions from the second half of the 19th century, this chasse was likely intended for a private oratory, or kept in a conventual or ecclesiastical environment. The chasse, in gilt cast brass, rests on four ball feet. The abundant decoration - pinnacles, Gothic friezes, fleur-de-lis crosses and spinning tops - is inspired by medieval sacred architecture. It retains its pyramidal lid with a removable cross, but three of its glass walls are missing, only the front glass is preserved.
