Gilt bronze devotional medal on a wire stand featuring an oval frame topped with a shield with plant elements in a symmetrical composition and another peak below also with plant elements and foliage, and the figure of a saint within this smooth frame. Standing, holding a staff in one hand and raising the other in a blessing gesture, stands a male figure dressed in liturgical attire, accompanied by some small figures in prayer, placed in a barrel or bucket. Saint Nicholas of Myra or Bari was a bishop who died around the middle of the 4th century AD. One of his most famous miracles is that of the resurrection of three children (depicted in this work) sacrificed by an innkeeper to feed his customers. Although he was bishop of the city of Myra, he is depicted here wearing liturgical vestments, but without the usual headdress (miter). The three spheres that appear on the book are said to allude to the miracle in which the saint helps the father of three daughters to collect a dowry for them (these are three golden spheres). -
