Paneled Cabinet. Oak, Iron. Navarre, 17th Century.
Paneled cabinet. Oak, iron. Navarre, 17th century.
It has some flaws.
It comes with three keys. This is a single-piece piece of furniture, not two separate elements, made of walnut. It consists of a lower section with two doors opening onto a single compartment containing a shelf and two drawers fitted with simple handles and lock rosettes, as well as a slightly recessed upper section, also featuring two doors opening onto another single compartment. The exterior is decorated with rectangular panels carved with simple geometric shapes (diamonds on the doors, curved shapes and bands on the drawers, and plain panels on the sides). Stylistically, it recalls the typical forms of 16th-century Spanish Renaissance cabinetmaking, both in its composition and in its panel decoration. Compare it, for example, with a sideboard from Guipúzcoa in the Núria Pla collection, dated between 1670 and 1700; with the 17th-century alcove (upper section with lattice doors) made of walnut, pine, and iron, now housed at the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid; or with the 17th-century alcove with turned balusters from the Cervantes House Museum in Valladolid. ·
