Large Antique Hanging Corner Shelf In Gilded Wood With Mecca Finish
Large corner shelf in gilded wood with mecca finish.
Southern Italy, second half of the 19th century.
Let us recall that the mecca gilding effect is not achieved with gold or bronze powder, but rather with a thin layer of silver leaf -which acts as a reflective base- upon which a shellac finish mixed with pigments is applied.
The result is a gilding with a softer tone compared to pure gold, featuring shimmering and slightly amber hues.
The shelf is offered as I purchased it, with visible signs of use in the photos and no restoration work undertaken. Some cracks in the wood can be noticed, along with a few inactive woodworm holes and some missing gilding areas, all visible in the published photos.
