A superb 17th century French old master oil on canvas depicting an Allegory of the Arts. An allegory is a painting whose subject has hidden meaning - in this attractive work we can see a cherub surrounded by objects relating to the arts such as books, an artists palette and astrological equipment. Invariably allegorical paintings of this period depict a range of creative tools and often indications of academic appreciation.

This is an extremely beautiful painting.

Condition report : The painting has had historical restoration and has also been lined , most likely circa 1850. There are some age-related marks and tiny paint surface abrasions in a few places and evidence of old small retouching . The paint surface is stable and clean with excellent tonality and colour preservation and the canvas is in good tension.
