This painting by André Devambez is first striking for the originality of its plunging point of view, a bold and characteristic choice of the artist, who enjoys surprising the viewer. Rather than adopting a frontal or classical perspective, Devambez here chooses a vertiginous angle, situated above a port or basin, probably that of Honfleur.

This almost vertical view, as if taken from a high window or a balustrade, compresses the space into a dense and dynamic composition. In the foreground, two boats are moored in dark water, with muted reflections.
