Scene Of A Bustling Harbor. Etienne Bouillé (1858–1933).
"Scene of a Busy Harbor." Etienne BOUILLE.
Etienne Bouillé (Villers-Saint-Benoit, 1858 – Perros-Guirec, 1933), like many painters of the late 19th century, discovered Brittany and its picturesque landscapes. Captivated by the beauty of this region, he settled in Guingamp in 1892 and then lived in Perros-Guirec beginning in 1914. He exhibited regularly throughout western France as well as in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, and in 1902 he founded the Société des Amis des Arts de Bretagne.
His work was primarily inspired by Brittany, which he explored tirelessly. He painted the sea and harbor activities, villages, picturesque monuments, agricultural work, and scenes of popular piety. His canvases were based on studies made from life, supplemented—beginning in 1892—by photographs that allowed him to capture a scene.
