Kilim Soumak Shahsavan Iran 178 X 117 Cm

Mafresh opened and reconstituted Shahsavan Iranian wool, cotton warp, circa 1950. Very good condition.

Good size for this beautiful Shahsavan which required a lot of attention in its creation. It is composed in the central part, in soumak, of two richly decorated rectangles: zoomorphic peacocks, eight-pointed stars of Medes, göl (flowers), framed by a wide border featuring stars of Medes and various finer borders. On either side, the kilims with polychrome bands were originally the underside of the mafresh (trunk) and are in harmony with the center.

The territory of the shahsavans is located to the south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnic groups, the shahsavan confederation was formed under the reign of the Safavid sovereign Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
