Kilim Soumak Shahsavan Iran 160 X 107 Cm

Mafresh opened and reconstituted Iranian shahsavan wool, cotton warp, circa 1960. Very good condition.

Shahsavan kilim consisting in the central part made of soumak, of a pattern with bands of different widths using göls (flowers) and zoomorphs. On either side, irregular kilims complete this beautiful piece.
Beautiful colors: burgundy red, turmeric, black. Beautiful harmony.

The territory of the shahsavans is located to the south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnic groups, the shahsavan confederation was formed under the reign of the Safavid sovereign Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).

The mafresh also called farmash is a large bag used during the movement of the group, which had the function of a chest. It was used to store clothes, blankets (djajims) but also dishes and kitchen utensils. In preparation for her wedding, the young shahsavan girl made a pair of mafreshs. One for clothes, the other for blankets, etc.
