Magnificent high-relief wood carving depicting the symbol of the Mystical Pelican, a Christian allegory of Christ’s sacrifice. The piece, masterfully carved and gilded with gold leaf, shows the iconic bird piercing its own breast to feed its young—a powerful representation of the Eucharistic mystery and divine charity.
This sculpture, from the Sicilian school, dates to the second half of the 18th century and stands out for the quality of its Baroque carving and the sculptural richness of the feathers, rendered with extraordinary dynamism and elegance. The vibrant effect of the gilding is still well preserved, bearing witness to the high craftsmanship and fine materials used.
The relief is mounted on a modern base with a pink marble frame and black background, designed to enhance the artwork while offering a contemporary display solution, in full respect of its original devotional function.
Excellent condition, with the original gilding well preserved. A minimal restoration has been carried out on the gilding of the head.
