A Pair Of 18th Century Candlesticks
In chased and gilded bronze, the twisted triangular shaft, the shoulder decorated with acanthus leaves, the socket with a foliate motif, resting on a circular base with recesses decorated with scrolling acanthus clasps.
This pair of candlesticks can be compared to a red chalk drawing by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, from the collections of Gaspard-Moïse-Augustin de Fontanieu, intendant of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne during the reign of Louis XV. Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750), a talented goldsmith and pioneer of the Rocaille style, created this model of candlestick for Queen Marie Leczinska in 1729.
