Bronze Of Ganesh, South-central India, 18th/19th Century
This is one of the finest Indian bronzes I have ever seen. The details are extraordinary. This Ganesh is Valampuri (trunk facing right). Ganesh is the remover of obstacles, and Valampuri is considered a highly auspicious form of Ganesh. He holds his broken tusk, battle axe, noose, and ladoo in his hands. He sits in lalitasana, starting with his lower right hand. He is displayed with jewelry, his belt is a naga (serpent), and his vahana, the rat, coils around his left knee.
