"Cameroon, Bamiléké People, Bamiléké Helmet Mask, First Half Of The 20th Century."
Lovely Bamiléké helmet mask from the Baleng region, Cameroon, dating from the first half of the 20th century. Remarkably old and sculpted, this large royal mask was used by secret societies and was only displayed on rare occasions related to the image of the Fo'o (chief). It was not worn but exhibited in the market square or chieftaincy, enthroned next to the chief. Of expressionist design and in perfect harmony with the demanding corpus, it represents a human head surmounted by two horns, the expressive face marked by puffy cheeks and wide-open eyes. This iconography personifies a man of power (great notable or chief) and the horns of buffalo horns, a totemic animal, give him power and strength. Made of hardwood, it bears witness to its patina of use. Good condition. Height 58 cm. Width 28 cm. Depth 37 cm. The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small lighter from a well-known brand.
