Batak Ritual Mortar, Sumatra
Ritual mortar with a singa head, a very recurrent symbol in the Batak culture, an indigenous ethnic group originating from North Sumatra, Indonesia. The singa head in Batak ritual objects symbolizes protection and the link between the spiritual and human worlds. It is a mythological figure often represented on sacred objects such as magic sticks called tunggal panaluan. These sculptures serve to ward off evil spirits and ensure the safety of the community. 19th century period, beautiful patina of use well marked on the handle (luster) and at the bottom of the mortar.
