Small Wall Holy Water Font – Lamentation of Christ
Finely crafted small wall-mounted holy water font in relief, depicting the Lamentation of Christ. Christ lies at the center of the composition, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene, all expressing their sorrow.
At the base, a richly decorated basin is designed to hold holy water. The scene is framed within an architectural structure in neoclassical style, featuring pilasters with capitals, a triangular pediment, and a cross at the top.
The finely chiseled details — drapery, facial expressions, floral and foliate ornamentation — reflect meticulous artisanal craftsmanship. The piece was cast and then hand-finished.
This type of domestic holy water font was commonly found in Catholic households in the late 19th to early 20th century, a period marked by widespread production of devotional objects. The decorative style is typical of Spanish religious art revival, drawing inspiration from 17th-century models.
These items were often given as gifts for First Communion and kept in bedrooms, near the bed.
Very good overall condition, with Spanish hallmarks visible on the reverse.
