The painting, oil on canvas, depicts the sweet face of the Madonna slightly in profile and modestly turned downwards with half-closed eyes.
The stylistic qualities of the painting allow us to place it in the context of the painting of Michele Desubleo, a prominent artist of the 17th century.

Michele Desubleo, known as Michele Fiammingo (Maubeuge, 1601 – Parma, 1676)
Michele Desubleo, a painter of Flemish origins, moved to Italy in the third decade of the 17th century. In 1624 he was in Rome, where he had the opportunity to assimilate the Caravaggio language and the innovations offered by the Roman artistic scene, studying the works of Raphael, Michelangelo, Annibale Carracci and Domenichino. In the 1630s he settled in Bologna: he attended Guido Reni's studio and then gradually carved out a space of autonomy. The success of his art is undoubtedly to be found in the delicate stylistic mix, which from a Caravaggio-style start combines Renian and Venetian inflections, synthesizing a lexicon of balanced and absorbed elegance. In a short time his works found a place in the most important collections of the city of Bologna. He was also active for a long time in Veneto, leaving important works including the Calling of the Sons of Zebedee and the Transfiguration for the church of San Giacomo in Monselice and the altarpiece of the Agony in the Garden in the church of San Zaccaria in Venice. From 1665 he is documented in Parma, a city in which he left significant paintings, including the large altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Saints for the Cathedral and the canvas of a profane subject that deals with the theme of Sacred Love that conquers profane love. He was the author of numerous canvases intended for private collectors, mainly of profane subjects, in which he probably achieved the highest level of quality, placing himself as one of the champions of that cultured and extremely elegant classicism which represents one of the most interesting trends in seventeenth-century Italian painting.
