"Lucas De Leyde Entourage E (1494-1533) The Kiss Of Judas And The Arrest Of Christ"
Workshop of Lucas de Leyde (1494-1533) The Kiss of Judas and the Arrest of ChristThe Kiss of Judas is the sign used by Judas Iscariot (one of the twelve apostles) to designate Jesus of Nazareth, and subsequently betray him, so that the guards of the Temple of Jerusalem would know which person to arrest. With this kiss, Judas identified the one the guards had to arrest, because they had never seen Jesus. Judas Iscariot had previously agreed with the priests of the Temple, members of the Sanhedrin, to help capture Jesus in exchange for 30 pieces of silver. Indeed, Judas was the treasurer of the apostles, he is moreover most often represented with a purse in his hand or at his belt, symbolizing the character's greed. Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533)Also known as Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, van Leyden was a Dutch engraver and painter, born and active mainly in the city from which he took his name, Leiden. He was one of the first Dutch representatives of genre painting and one of the greatest engravers in the history of art. However, while the master's painted work today only numbers 35 paintings and altarpieces, his engraved work amounts to some 200 pieces, most of them burin engravings, dated between 1508 and 1530. The master's beginnings are placed under the aegis of his immense contemporary, GermanAlbrecht Dürer (1471-1528), while his final production attests to the influence of Italian art through the work of Marcantonio Raimondi and the Italianist Jan GossaertCharacteristics of the paintingoil on varnished oak panels yellowed in its jut panel dimension 72 X 55.5 CmOld restoration, repainted some missingOur painting is an anonymous work of a Dutch painter of the 16th century.
