Object description :

"André Delacroix (1878-1934) Sidi Bou Saïd Orientalist Painting Tunisia Dar Lasram"
Superb oil on canvas by the Orientalist painter André Delacroix.
This large panoramic-format piece depicts a magnificent sunset over the plains of Carthage. Oil paintings of this size are rare on the market.

The artist titled and located the work on the back as follows:

"The sparkling of the evening sun over the plains of Carthage
December 4, 1930 – André Delacroix
Dar Lasram Srira in Sidi Bou Saïd, near Tunis, Tunisia"

The warm color palette is sublime.
The artist’s impressionist style, with remarkable impasto work, is particularly striking.
Notably, the vegetation in purple hues contrasts beautifully with the golden light of the sunset.

André Delacroix is renowned for his depictions of Sidi Bou Saïd, where he lived.

The painting is in very good condition. Sold without frame.

Dimensions: 100 x 45 cm

André Delacroix (1878–1934)

André Delacroix was a French Orientalist painter whose work belongs to the tradition of early 20th-century traveling artists.
Born in Constantine (Algeria), he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers.
After spending several years in Asia—particularly in Indochina and Cambodia—he settled in Sidi Bou Saïd, Tunisia, in 1920.

He exhibited at the Tunisian Salon from 1921 to 1923 and was a member of the Colonial Society of French Artists.
In 1924, he co-founded the Society of Tunisian Artists, serving as its president until his death in 1934.
He also held solo exhibitions at the Correspondence Salon of the Magasin Général in 1926, 1928, 1929, 1930, and 1931.

Delacroix is known for his luminous, colorful landscapes depicting scenes from North Africa and Southeast Asia.
His works capture the essence of the places he visited, with a particular focus on light and atmosphere.
Among his notable works are views of Sidi Bou Saïd, Carthage, Radès, as well as landscapes from Indochina and Marseille.
