"Metal Pocket Syringe By Mathieu"
A pocket hypodermic syringe of unusual design, constructed entirely of metal and fitted with a long, protective, unscrewable cap. The needle is made of gilded brass. The instrument is signed "Mathieu", therefore French, and dated circa 1860-1870. The plunger has no graduation, which is also quite unusual. This syringe is close to the first version of the Pravaz syringe, manufactured by Charrière in 1853 and now housed in the Museum of the History of Medicine in Lyon. The syringe is 8.2 cm long, including the cap.
