Joseph Cremer, Pair Of Marquetry Paintings, 19th Century
Artist: Joseph Cremer (1811-1878)
Pair of small marquetry paintings depicting genre scenes. One depicts two young women and a little girl carrying fruit accompanied by a dog, the other a family in front of a house. The figures are treated with great refinement and the different types of wood provide beautiful contrasts.
Both artworks are signed “J. Cremer” and dated 1847 in the lower right part. Joseph Cremer (1811-1878) was a marquetry and mosaic artist born in Luxembourg and active in Paris from 1839 until his death. He took part in numerous exhibitions, winning medals in 1839, 1844, 1849 and 1851. In 1855, he took part in the Universal Exhibition and was described as the “most skilled of marquetry artists”.
