Gabriella Crespi For Christian Dior, Wicker Tray, 20th Century

Rectangular serving tray made of Plexiglas and rattan, featuring two brass handles.

Gabriella Crespi (1922–2017) was an Italian designer who studied at the Polytechnic University of Milan. She began her career in the 1950s, creating furniture and art objects characterized by clean, geometric lines. In keeping with the “hippie chic” aesthetic, she regularly used natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, and wicker. She gained prominence and worked for numerous well-known figures, from Grace Kelly to the Shah of Iran. In the 1960s, she began a collaboration with the House of Dior, initially designing home accessories and tableware, and then, starting in the 1970s, creating furniture. Starting in the 1980s, and for nearly 20 years, she went on a spiritual retreat in India before resuming artistic collaborations in fashion and design during the last decade of her life.
