This simply carved and molded red marble cup is set in a chiseled and gilt bronze mount, reflecting all the codes of the Renaissance style. Lion heads and claws, simple scrolls, and an allegory of Victory are all references to antiquity, while the plant motifs and small flowers seem closer to a Renaissance ornamental vocabulary. This mounted cup undoubtedly reflects the historicist style of the second half of the 19th century.
