"Pair Of Large Brass Basins With Lion Muzzles Decor "
There are ancient objects whose true function escapes us a little, because we have, for our domestic tasks, escaped the technical constraints of these times. These two large containers, made like cauldrons, resting on a tripod base in claws, and decorated with lion muzzles, holding in their mouths a handle while falling must have decorated the hearth of a large Victorian fireplace, placed on either side. Some argue that they are planters, the weight of the plant and the earth, as well as the absence of water drainage incline me to think that they are rather large buckets for small logs (or for the dried peat used as fuel in Ireland). One of these large copperware is repaired inside, the copper having given way at the place of two feet. And even if it is not visible from the outside, inside it lacks discretion...the other one is however in very good condition.
