PATRICE PLACEMAN – Red Ball, Églomisé Oil Painting Under Plexiglass, 1996
Futuristic and surrealist painting using the églomisé technique (also known as reverse painting on glass), executed in acrylic on the back of a plexiglass sheet. This striking work by Belgian artist Patrice Placeman demonstrates remarkable airbrush mastery. The composition is constructivist, futuristic, and optical — reminiscent of the style of Victor Vasarely or Yvaral.
Signed and dated lower right.
Note: Some reflections from the plexiglass are visible in the photos due to the nature of the surface — difficult to photograph.

About the Artist
Patrice Placeman was born in Brussels in 1949.

Education

  • 1963: Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Liège (Belgium)

  • 1965: Center for Decorative Arts, Brussels (Belgium)

From 1975 to 1993, he lived between Brussels, Miami, and Paris. Considered a key figure in Optical Art (Op'Art), Placeman stands out as a contemporary artist of rare technical precision. He has created a unique, futuristic, and spatially surreal universe — even inventing a new being, the Placemanoid, to replace the humanoid in his works.

Rejecting traditional methods, he uses airbrush techniques to create imaginary scenes that captivate the viewer. The églomisé process he employs is a highly demanding reverse painting method that requires exceptional skill. His use of innovative tools and materials, such as airbrushes and plexiglass, set him apart during his time.

Few of his works are currently available on the art market — a fact that should soon attract collectors' attention. He has held numerous exhibitions worldwide (list available upon request).
