Offered here is a beautiful and highly detailed pair of antique Samson figural groups, crafted in Paris circa 1850. These allegorical scenes of the Four Seasons reinterpret the 18th-century Bow porcelain composition known as “Putti Garlanding a Goat,” and elevate it into a dynamic Rococo tableau with exceptional artistic merit.
The groups feature finely modelled nude cherubs (putti) on richly enameled bases. In one, Spring and Summer are portrayed with wreaths and wheat atop a sheep; in the other, Autumn and Winter are depicted with grapes, a goat, and a brazier. The modelling is full of movement, charm, and elegance.
Notable for their hand-painted decoration and restrained gilding, these pieces exhibit the best traits of the Samson workshop. They are marked beneath with the anchor and dagger (in reference to Bow) and Samson’s own reversed geometric mark, a rare dual attribution.
The Samson firm, founded in 1845, is well regarded for its museum-quality interpretations of 18th-century porcelain. These pieces are not merely copies but unique reinterpretations meant for a sophisticated 19th-century clientele.
