This oval devotional reliquary from the 19th century contains a 1st Class Relic (Ex Ossibus) of:
Saint Margaret of Cortona – Penitent and Third Order Franciscan
The relic is preserved within a small theca, mounted under a convex glass window. The interior includes a hand-inscribed paper label reading S. Marg. Cort., positioned against a red silk background with visible cloth threads and relic fibers at the center. The theca is crafted in aged gilt brass.
The reverse bears an intact episcopal red wax seal with original red silk threads, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of the relic. This type of relic was distributed under the supervision of ecclesiastical authorities and was intended for private devotion or small altars.
Saint Margaret of Cortona (1247–1297) is venerated as a model of penance and conversion. Following a life of sin, she embraced radical poverty and joined the Third Order of Saint Francis, devoting her life to prayer and service.
Condition:
Structurally stable and intact. Minor wear to metal surface and wax, appropriate to age. Seal and threads remain unbroken.
