19th C Russian Orthodox Travel Icon Crucifix In Bronze With Enamel & Golgotha

This is a 19th-century Russian Orthodox travel icon crucifix in cast bronze with hand-applied enamel, measuring approximately 21 cm high and 13.5 cm wide. It is a powerful example of devotional art from Old Believer workshops, designed for portable veneration during pilgrimage or private prayer. Known as a Golgotha Crucifix, this piece is not merely ornamental — it is a liturgical object rich in theology, intended to travel with the faithful and anchor daily devotion.

At the center is Christ crucified, beneath the traditional inscription IC XC (“Jesus Christ”) and the INRI plaque above His head. Above, a powerful image of the Holy Trinity is depicted — God the Father blessing, the Holy Spirit as a dove, and angelic hosts surrounding them in adoration. Below Christ’s feet lies the skull of Adam, a symbol of the redemption of mankind through the blood of the Cross.

The blue and white champlevé enamel highlights symbolic areas, especially around the Golgotha mound, enhancing its visual and devotional depth. Cyrillic inscriptions explain each theological reference, inviting reflection and prayer. These bronze travel crosses were widely used among monks, pilgrims, and lay believers in the Russian Empire and were revered as protectors and spiritual anchors in daily life.

The reverse of the cross shows natural oxidation and handling marks — evidence of its authentic use as a sacred travel item. A deeply expressive object of personal piety and historical richness.

Condition:
Good condition consistent with age. Surface patina and enamel wear are visible but stable. No cracks or breaks. Fully legible inscriptions and deeply cast details.
