A great admirer and friend of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Lucien Bonaparte published a sentimental and exotic novel in 1799, set in Ceylon and Colombo.
Printed in small numbers (apparently 300 copies) in May 1799, "The Indian Tribe" enjoyed critical acclaim. Lucien Bonaparte, who became Minister of the Interior after the 18th Brumaire, purchased and destroyed all copies still in circulation. Three copies remain in collections open to the public: one at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, another at the Château d'Oron library (Switzerland), and the third at the New York Public Library, illustrated with five engravings by Pierre-Paul Prud'hon. The fourth copy of the original edition is now held by the Fondation Napoléon. Oil on canvas, painted between 1800 and 1820, on its original canvas and stretcher.
