Arched Altarpiece Frame, Veneto, Late 16th – Early 17th Century

Elegant arched frame originally made for an altarpiece, from the Veneto region and dating to the late 16th or very early 17th century. Carved in poplar wood, it reflects the restrained refinement typical of ecclesiastical furnishings from peripheral churches or modest commissions, where artisanal quality met budget-conscious solutions.
The frame retains its original “poor art” lacquer finish, combining green and white (lead white) tones designed to create visual contrast and enhance the depth of the architectural elements. Foliage motifs run along the uprights and the arched top, while the bottom rail features more elaborate, late-Renaissance inspired carvings.
The original lacquer is in good overall condition, with a rich and appealing patina. Minor gluing and reinforcement interventions have been carried out. Small traces of woodworm are present in some carved areas, but do not compromise the structural integrity.
