Pair Of Shahsavan Soumaks Kilims Iran

Pair of Shahsavan soumaks, wool, cotton warp and weft, circa 1950. Very good condition.

Originally, it was a packsaddle bag (gorjin) that was separated into two pieces. On the left soumak, we see the loops that were used to close the bag. A repeating pattern across the entire surface represents zoomorphs. Beautiful harmony of colors.

The territory of the shahsavans is located south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnic groups, the shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629). Shahsavan means "those who love the Shah".
