This rare and authentic Gashghai in 'mian farsh' format, with rich and elaborate graphics, is in a beautiful state of preservation. On a deep red background are represented a multitude of motifs: göl (flowers), palms, 'S', boteh, two stylized trees of life or 'chenar'.
The central medallion, the four spandrels as well as the main border illuminate the entire rug. Two 'herati' borders frame the main border, probably repeating the 'kharchanghi' motif.
'S' motif: It originally represents a two-headed dragon that could be seen on ancient Persian, Chinese and Celtic bronzes.
'Boteh' motif: Ancient motif with different meanings. It can represent the transformation of Zoroaster into a cypress, symbol of eternity, but also into a drop of water, a palm, a tree. The term boteh means "flowering bush" in Persian. There is a similarity with yin and yang.
