Object description :

"Gustavo De Rossi (1876-1946), "interior Of The Uffizi Tribune" Veduta Grand Tour"
Gustavo De Rossi (1876-1946), "Interior of the Tribune-Venus of the Medici", oil on canvas signed lower left.

Gustavo De Rossi belonged for a period to that group called "the Copyists of the Uffizi".
In 1769, with the opening of the Uffizi to the public, a category that well represented the visitors of the Gallery was precisely that of the copyists.
However, it was in the nineteenth century that the demand for reproductions of "hand-made" works grew exponentially and to regulate this phenomenon, in 1831 a "Regulation for the copying of the monuments of the RR Gallery of Statues" was established, consisting of nine articles. First of all, the copyists, who worked on commission, had to present a request on white paper to the director of the Galleries, in which they indicated their personal details and the work they wanted to copy. The director generally gave his consent, but also had the right to deny it. Furthermore, the director established the timing of the copy, the location and decided whether or not to remove the painting from the original frame and protective glass. The Regulation also specified the behavior that copyists had to maintain in the Gallery: they were required to wear clothing appropriate to the location, to be silent while working and there was an absolute ban on touching the works.
In a pre-photography era, copyists were essential for the dissemination and study of art. The museum stamps were rigorously affixed to the works, which still allow us to attribute them with certainty to this period.

Here, De Rossi has magnificently represented the Tribuna degli Uffizi with its sculptures, the Venus de Medici in the foreground, giving excellent perspective emphasis to the beautiful flooring. De Rossi was also a painter of views, many of his canvases depict panoramas of the city of Florence, works highly requested by the nascent mass tourism that passed through the city. In 1904, he participated in the Italian Exhibition in London. In 1948, at the exhibition on the 19th century Livorno, "Palazzo Michelangiolo" and "Ponte Vecchio" will be exhibited.
