Presumed Portrait of Frederick III the Wise (1463–1525), Elector of Saxony
Oil on canvas, relined
To be compared with the portrait painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder
Canvas dimensions: Height: 50 cm – Width: 43 cm
The painting is in good overall condition, despite two areas of paint loss in the upper part of the canvas.
It is worth noting that the canvas was likely extended during a previous restoration, which explains the presence of two “creases” at the top and bottom.
A very fine portrait that conveys a strong presence. Notable for the painterly quality in the detailing of the garment and the subject’s beard.
