Large embroidery in petit point depicting Mgr Denys Affre, Archbishop of Paris, who died during the uprisings of 1848.

Mgr Denys Affre (1793 - 1848) was Archbishop of Paris from 1840 to 1848. During the revolutionary days of June 1848, he tried to interpose himself between the insurgents and the army to restore peace, but was mortally wounded on a barricade. He died as a martyr of reconciliation, leaving behind an image of a devoted and peacemaking pastor.
