Object description :

"Factice Collection Calas Affair Toulouse Languedoc Bibliophily 3 Factums XVIII Voltaire Justice "
A factitious collection in its contemporary binding, composed of three factums, all from 1765, concerning the Calas Affair, the most famous legal case of the 18th century in France. The Calas Affair was a French legal case that took place from 1761 to 1765 in Toulouse, in a context of the stifling of Protestantism after the Revocation. It owes its fame to Voltaire's intervention in his Treatise on Tolerance. Jean Calas was a Protestant merchant from Toulouse. His son having been found dead, strangled or hanged according to the doctor present on the scene, he is accused of having murdered him to prevent the young man from converting to Catholicism. This affair is essentially political, rather than revealing the functioning of the royal courts. It is marred by numerous abuses of procedure in the administration of evidence (misuse of the adminicule and the monitoire, among others). Jean Calas, who always claimed his innocence, was finally tortured, strangled and then burned on March 10, 1762. In 1765, the magistrates of the Royal Court restored the widow of Jean Calas to her rights, and rehabilitated the memory of her deceased husband.
