HOSPITAL (Guillaume François marquis de) - Analysis of the infinitely small, for the intelligence of curved lines. Paris, Chez Jombert, 1781; in-4, XX + 234 pp + 11 folding plates, full binding in period speckled calfskin, spine with nerves decorated with flowers, red title piece. New edition revised and enlarged by M. Le Fevre. Guillaume François Antoine de L'Hôpital, Marquis de Sainte-Mesme, Count d'Entremont, Lord of Ocques, La Chaise, Le Bréau and other places (1661 - 1704) was a French mathematician. He is known for the rule that bears his name: L'Hôpital's rule, which calculates the value of a limit for a fraction where the numerator and denominator both tend to zero. He is also the author of the first book in French on differential calculus: Analysis of the Infinitely Small for the Intelligence of Curved Lines. Published in 1696, this text is based on the lessons given to it by Jean Bernoulli, during the winter of 1691-1692, on the differential calculus invented by Leibniz in 1684.
