The artist
Richard Lafite Faxon, born on November 9, 1816 in Bordeaux and died around 1875, was a French painter specializing in seascapes and landscapes. The son of Richard Faxon, originally from Boston, he studied under Jean-Baptiste Durand-Brager, a renowned painter of maritime scenes.
Faxon exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1859 to 1875, as well as in Bordeaux and other French cities. His works, mainly seascapes and landscapes, were inspired by his native region, the Gironde, and the coasts of Brittany. His style blended French naturalism with British romanticism, characterized by deep, stormy skies, and a precise depiction of ships and sailors.
The Musée des The Brest Fine Arts Museum owns one of his works. These are rare at public auction and sought after by marine enthusiasts.
The work can be viewed at the gallery (07240).
