Jean Villeri (1896-1982)Aurore des sables 1956Oil on canvas, signed lower left.This vigorous composition, with a subtle chromatic balance, is fully in line with the materialist abstraction developed by Jean Villeri from the 1950s.Born in Oneglia, Italy in 1896, Jean Villeri was one of the discreet but constant actors of post-war abstraction. A friend of René Char, exhibiting at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and the Salon de Mai, he was defended by the Maeght gallery in the 1950s. His work, both poetic and dense, combines the influences of Cubism and materialist research that crossed post-war Europe.Some wear from use is to be noted.
