Although the symbol of the Sun in Splendor was used in heraldic expressions of this period, it appears to have been a pilgrimage item, particularly because of its location. In the heraldic version, it is a symbol of the House of York after Edward's (later Edward IV) crucial victory at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross. Before the battle, three suns appeared in the sky, the result of a phenomenon called parhelion.
Size: 4.5 cm in diameter.
The badge has not undergone any repairs; the sun is off-center (not cast) due to its manufacture. A French example of a sun in splendor is located at the Cloisters (MET), in the United States
