H 90 cm x W 53 cm x D 26 cm A very fine example of an ancient image of the Buddha indicating the junction of several influences: Ava (14/18th century): The face rounds and leaves its angular forms although they are still slightly perceptible, the austere expression begins an obvious softening but not yet as much as in later periods. Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885): The eyebrows no longer stretch towards the temples, they are arched. The overall posture is still part of a careful sobriety but not as luxurious as it will become during the Mandalay period. Black lacquer largely dominates the entire work, entirely on the body.Mandalay (1857-1885/1948): The throne is made up of a double row of stylized lotus petals announcing the emerging influence of the Mandalay style, as are the red overpaints.
